An interstate cattle smuggling racket was busted by the Tamil Nadu Police with the help of animal welfare volunteers, officials said on Sunday.
The police rescued 57 animals that were being transported in cruel conditions at Chengalpattu.
Based on a complaint by animal welfare activist Sai Vignesh, the police intercepted the vehicle and pulled it over for inspection. Officials found that the animals were stacked and tied closely to prevent them from moving, and chilli powder was purportedly placed in their eyes to keep them from sleeping.
An FIR was registered with charges of animal cruelty under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act against the truck driver and the cattle owner.
The animals were sent to the Almighty Animal Care Trust sanctuary in Thiruvallur for immediate care and treatment. Further investigation is underway.
