Animal Corner: Home from home

Trying to catch up with Jenny Clarke, APAA president, is a hard job. The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve’s motto is ‘Here to Help’.

Jenny is always on the move, now following up a call from Trevor, who is normally on cat care and colony duty. “He had just taken his dogs for a walk in Estombar and came across a little abandoned fellow.” Trevor deduced that someone had decided to look after the doggie by placing a bed under a tree and feeding him. “He looks a fine chappie. In good health, we will find out if he is chipped and try and re-locate him.”

Jenny has received a text from a lady in Silves. “Just changed homes and is in an apartment.” Unfortunately, the dog she chose, a Beagle-type, is too large. Now four months old, desperate for a new home. The dog is microchipped and will, of course, be ready for SNiP’ping in the next few months.

‘Marley’ has to cope with being left on a balcony for 8-9 hours a day. Not a happy puppy.

Having just returned from Animal Rescue Algarve, delivering a cat for ARA to look after and re-home, Jenny’s phone and notebook are full to bursting. “Lucky belonged to a lady who has gone into care. The daughter cannot take him.” He’s micro-chipped but not SNiP’ped.

ARA and APAA had recently announced ‘Pet Legacy’ for pet owners. Should owner have an illness or die, and have animals, by nominating a guardian and ARA as future carer, the problem like Lucky’s would not be! ARA’s legacy means they would take on the animal and find it a suitable home.

João Ferreira, manager at the shelter just outside of Loulé, has reshuffled the cats around. Being an apartment cat, it is nervous and timid. “It’s in a rabbit hutch at the moment!”

Jenny grins. “Lucky comes out when no one is about for a poo and a pee.” Hopefully another apartment dweller will take him on.

Three animals, with three different lifestyles, requiring some sort of accommodation, in the full sense of the word.

  • Male canine, two-three-year-old small golden Podengo, near Estombar, needs a good home;
  • Four-month larger Beagle-type ‘Marley’ needs a home with space;
  • Five-year-old feline ‘Lucky’ needs another apartment-style life to be happy again;
  • Not forgetting small six-year-old golden Podengo ‘Lilly’ and two-year-old German Shepherd ‘Rafa’.
