LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Tippecanoe County Commissioners approved bids for the new Greater Lafayette’s newest animal shelter, the Humane Society for Greater Lafayette, which totaled around $4.7 million.
The commissioners had received 25 bids for the project, and with the recommendation of Tecton Construction Management, they accepted 14 of those bids at Monday’s meeting.
Based on the original offers provided in the bids, the total would have been around $5.6 million for the project, but with the recommendation from Tecto, the commissioners decided to use alternative materials and adjusted the project plan in order to meet the budgetary requirements.
Some of the recommendations offered were to: replace the planting of grass seed and exchange it with installing sod; change the quantity of water heaters and their location on site; and change the planned backflow prevention device to a smaller system.
The county also rejected one bid related to heat and cooling system of the new animal shelter. The original bid came out to be $570,000. The county decided to push the bid off until the second phase of the project in hopes of receiving a cheaper bid.
With the adjustment to the project plans, the county was able to reduce the cost to $4,752,271, which falls under the $5.3 million budget for construction costs.
In May 2022, the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette and the Tippecanoe County government announced that they would be ending their contracts with Almost Home Humane Society and Crystal Creek Kennels, and instead opting to create a new and larger animal shelter to service all three communities through the Humane Society for Greater Lafayette.
In order to fund the construction and operation of this new shelter, the three governments contributed $6.5 million to the shelter and raised additional funds via community donations. The estimated overall budget of the project stands at around $7.8 million.
The new shelter will be located at 3150 Sagamore Parkway in Lafayette.
