Officials said it’s the first change in the shelter’s hours in a decade.

“We had more than 15,000 people visit the shelter on Saturdays last year and nearly 10,000 on Sundays, and that’s with only being open on Sunday afternoons,” Diane Summers, manager for Orange County Animal Services, said. “With opening for a full eight-hour day on Sundays, we anticipate seeing another 500 shelter visitors per month.”

In addition to adding hours on Sundays, the shelter is also reducing hours on Wednesdays. The shelter will now be open from 2 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, giving shelter staff opportunities for additional cleaning and for staff-wide training events. The shelter will be open from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. every other day of the week.

“This modification to our hours will be beneficial to shelter staff and pets alike,” Summers said. “Our main goal is to help boost adoptions.”
