It has been announced that an arrangement for the way food and animal health inspections will be carried out is almost complete. This works within a concept that establishes red and green tracks at Northern Irish ports to distinguish products staying in the UK from those going to the EU’s single market.

Specifics of the customs administration process for food safety inspections and animal health checks have not yet been clarified, however the general idea is that products coming in via the green lane will have fewer restrictions.

To avoid products from Northern Ireland from entering the EU’s internal markets across the boundary, the UK would have to comply with EU criteria.

VP of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, explained that “progress is being made, but difficulties remain. For us it is very clear equation: more and stronger safeguards we can get, more flexibility we can explore.”

Previously it was pitched by the European Commission that there should be a fast-track option for products going to Northern Ireland with no chance of entering the EU single market, which in theory would half the necessary paperwork. But the UK administration was set on stopping checks on green tracks products entirely.

EU diplomats are still wary and doubtful about Rishi Sunak’s ability to convince his party to support a protocol pact.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the head of the DUP, met with Micheál Martin, Ireland’s foreign minister, in discussions that were later defined as helpful and productive.

Recently, representatives of the British authorities rebuffed agreement rumours, claiming there were still unsolved problems that must be addressed.
