MADIKERI: The human-wild animal conflict has increased in Kodagu district, and necessary steps should be taken to check the same, Mysuru MP Yaduveer KC Wadiyar said on Thursday.

During a meeting at the ZP hall here, Yaduveer stressed on efforts to capture and relocate around 130 elephants which are troubling the villagers, so their lives are not lost, and their crops are intact.

Out of 130 elephants roaming close to the human habitats in the district, permission has been given to capture six of them, he stated.

DFO Prabhakar said the work on installing railway barricades to prevent elephants from venturing outside the woods in Nagarahole and other forest areas is on at a cost of Rs 10 crore.

MLC Mandepanda Suja Kushalappa spoke about the concerns raised in the wake of spotting a tiger at Kukluru area. Its movements should be monitored through camera trap, he suggested.

DC Venkat Raja and other officers were present.

‘Jackfruits disposed of due to fear of jumbos’

“The jackfruits are being disposed of due to fear of jumbos entering and destroying the crops in the estates after following the smell of the fruit,” said jackfruit growers and the villagers of Nokya.

“We are spending money to dispose of the jackfruits, which is a product that earns money. We have decided to bury the fruits as we cannot bear the pressure of the elephants that come looking for jackfruit. Thousands of rupees have to be spent for this,” farmer Cheppudira Cariappa and others said at a press conference in Gonikoppal.

The jumbos enter the village as it is at the borderline of Nagarhole forest. The forest department had installed a railway barricade in Bambukadu, Chamundi Male, Kunhiramanakatte up to Jungle Road, which seems to be of very poor quality because the jumbos easily enter the estate areas.

The iron gate installed in the jungle river is unsecured. The railway barricade project that was supposed to be built from Nokya Colony to Marapala has been stalled for six years and the problem is that the rods that were brought for the project are rusting. Already two persons lost their lives in this area due to the elephant attack, they said.

Locals Chekkera Kisu Tammaiah, Mallangada Gagan, VP Madaiah, Ramesh Kaverappa and others were present.
