Margao: Nearly three years after the contract with the animal welfare organisation to carry out the animal birth control (ABC) programme expired, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has been unable to put in place an alternative mechanism.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by MMC with South Goa Animal Welfare Trust, an animal welfare organisation that operated the dog shelter in Margao and the ABC programme for the last several years lapsed in Jan 2021.
The agreement hasn’t been renewed since, nor has any other organisation roped in so far by the MMC.
Moreover, the MMC also hasn’t been able to clear the dues of the earlier organisation.
At a recent MMC meeting, the proposals from a couple of organisations for undertaking the comprehensive sterilisation programme to “improve the welfare” of stray dogs population was discussed. MMC officials said that one of the proposals was under “serious consideration” but failed to give any reasons for the delay in finalising it.
