Organization Description: Founded in 1989, Animal Place is one of the oldest and largest sanctuaries for farmed animals in the United States. As an animal rights organization, we promote the complete protection of farmed animals and a vegan lifestyle. There are two facilities: a 600-acre sanctuary in Grass Valley, CA that serves as a permanent safe haven for farmed animals as well as an education center, a 12-acre Rescue & Adoption Center in Petaluma, CA.

Job Title: Volunteer & Event Coordinator

Job Status: Full-Time Employee, 40- hours per week including regular weekend days, Onsite

Job Location: Grass Valley, California

Reports to: Programs Director

Position Description: The Volunteer & Event Coordinator oversees all aspects of the volunteer program and, along with the Programs Director, coordinates virtual and in-person events. This position is responsible for recruiting, screening, hiring, training, and day-to-day scheduling of volunteers. They are also responsible for planning, organizing, and executing events to promote Animal Place’s mission. The ideal candidate should be passionate about animal rights and have a proven track record of working with volunteers and planning successful events.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Volunteer Coordination:

  • Develop and implement effective strategies to recruit and retain volunteers
  • Process and retain forms and records for volunteer personnel and document volunteer activities
  • Orient and facilitate training of volunteers to increase their understanding of Animal Place, its mission, and the roles and responsibilities of volunteers
  • Ensure volunteer protocols are followed and volunteers receive appropriate level of supervision
  • Contact and schedule volunteers for all volunteer needs across Animal Place’s programs
  • Use scheduling software and e-marketing tools for communications
  • Plan and implement volunteer recognition activities
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of the volunteer program and implement improvements as needed
  • Prepare quarterly and annual program reports
  • Work closely with the animal care department to ensure volunteers are up to date on the latest protocols
  • Work alongside the volunteers during their shifts in animal care, when needed

Event Coordination:

  • Develop and implement event plans to ensure success
  • With Programs Director, responsible for all aspects of onsite and virtual events from creation through evaluation
  • Events include, but are not limited to: MeatOut, Thank the Turkeys, Run for the Animals 5K run/walk, Oink-a-ween, bimonthly webinars, and other fundraising events
  • Coordinate with vendors, volunteers, and staff to ensure smooth event execution
  • Research, identify, and reach out to potential sponsors for events
  • Along with the programs team, promote events through social media, email marketing, and other channels to increase attendance
  • Work closely with Programs Director to ensure events align with the organization’s mission and values
  • Develop and implement post-event evaluation processes to identify areas of improvement

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist the program department with other duties as needed, particularly community education outreach and advocacy

QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Strong interest in and commitment to animal rights
  • Practice a vegan lifestyle
  • Knowledge of farmed animal issues, or willing to learn
  • Well organized: set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, and activities
  • Relationship builder: establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization
  • Problem solver: assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem
  • Innovator: develop new and unique ways to improve operations of the organization and to create new opportunities
  • Self-starter: can work independently and enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to professionally advocate Animal Place’s position on issues
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record
  • Experience supervising/managing volunteers a plus
  • Experience in event planning a plus
  • Previous volunteer or paid work in animal protection a plus
  • Experience with Google Drive preferred
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold/wet weather (average low is 35F) and hot summers (average high is 95-100F)

Salary: $19 per hour
