The Life of a Farmed Animal

Hear from Jose Valle, co-founder of Animal Equality, as he exposes routine animal cruelty on factory farms worldwide.

My name is Jose Valle, and I co-founded Animal Equality with Sharon Núñez and Javier Moreno in 2006.

I spent many years investigating farms and slaughterhouses. I witnessed scenes of suffering that I still find difficult to describe.

Imagine having to live through the screams of other animals.

Imagine waiting for the chance to close your eyes and finally find some relief.

This is the reality for pigs, hens, calves, chickens, and other animals trapped in factory farms.

Hens raised for eggs often undergo ‘forced molting,’ a practice banned in many countries but still carried out in others.

‘Forced molting’ deprives hens of water and sufficient food for a few days. This forces them to begin another egg-laying cycle.

They become so weak that many die.

Meanwhile, calves are separated from their mothers just a few hours after birth and cry for their comfort and warmth.

But the factory farming industry doesn’t stop there.

By leaving the lights of the sheds on, farmers keep chickens awake and eating constantly. This causes them to gain weight even faster, and their heart, lungs, and joints quickly deteriorate

It’s devastating for their health.

And then there’s foie gras, a dish made by force-feeding ducks and geese.

Farmers insert long metal tubes down their throats twice per day, fattening their livers until they grow up to ten times their normal size.

You can join the fight against this cruelty by supporting Animal Equality’s work today.

You’ll open the eyes of countless people who still don’t know what animals endure in factory farms and slaughterhouses.
