DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Scovill Zoo in Decatur is putting an interesting twist on Valentine’s Day gift ideas.
You can adopt one of three insects or animals in someone’s name: a hissing cockroach, a naked mole-rat or a turkey vulture. Prices vary from $20 to $40. If you buy one, you’ll get a picture of it, an adoption certificate and some artwork of their footprints.
“I think that it’s a goofy gift to give to your significant other,” said Lizzie Van Ert, Education Volunteer Coordinator. “Or I got them from my nieces and nephews previous years.”
She continued, “I know other zoos have kind of played with naming a hissing cockroach after an ex. And then, you know, it’s kind of like that play thing with it. But the fact that you get an artwork, a piece of their footprints, a photograph — I think it’s more of like a funny gift to give to a friend or family member.”
It’s the zoo’s third year doing this event. This time, all the proceeds will go toward renovating the alligator exhibit. Van Ert said you can call or visit the zoo anytime up until Valentine’s Day to purchase a gift.
