Huntsville Animal Services is again gearing up for Ground Dog Day, an annual event held in conjunction with Groundhog Day on Friday, Feb 2.
There’s no prognosticating groundhog in Huntsville to see a shadow, so Huntsville Animal Services relies on the forecasting skills of Cosmo, a mixed-breed male available for adoption. Using his keen nose, Cosmo will accurately predict the seasonal forecast by choosing either the “early spring” bowl of kibble or the bowl marked “more winter.”
The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption, fostering and spaying/neutering. In celebration of Cosmo’s big moment, the shelter will waive adoption fees on most adult dogs throughout the week leading up to Ground Dog Day.
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said Ground Dog Day not only presents opportunities to raise awareness about adopting and fostering, but also the daily work performed by Huntsville Animal Services employees. He praised the staff for their commitment to caring for animals in need and finding suitable adopters.
“The tireless efforts of the Huntsville Animal Services team make a significant impact on the well-being of our furry friends,” Mayor Battle said. “Their dedication ensures that animals receive the care they deserve while awaiting their forever homes.”
Virgie Graham, Interim Animal Services Director, said Ground Dog Day also highlights the importance of spaying and neutering and how it plays a substantial role in controlling the City’s pet population.
“Spaying and neutering are crucial steps in responsible pet ownership,” he said. “By addressing this issue, we improve the animals’ lives while contributing to the welfare of our community.”
Each pet is spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before leaving the shelter. Pets are also treated with a three-month application of flea and tick preventative.
