BHUBANESWAR: As the city sizzles amid the scorching heat, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (
BMC
) is facing the citizens’s ire for not doing enough for the stray dogs who are facing problems in the heat. Earlier, the civic body made provisions for drinking water for the stray animals and birds at the water kiosks here. But this year, nothing of that sort has been done yet.
“The administration should take steps to protect the animals from the heat. If not a shed, then they should at least provide them with drinking water, ,”
Rasulgarh
resident Dibakar Jena said.
They are also living beings and they deserve to be taken care of, he added.
“The animals in Nandankanan (zoological park) are getting a shed and artificial
rain
to protect themselves from the heat, but the strays are being ignored,” Patia resident
Priyabrata Mohapatra
said.
“If the pets can be taken care of then why not the stray animals. We are humans and we can take care of ourselves in the heat, but what about the strays. They can’t speak but they suffer in this as well. We need to take care of them,” Abhijit Sahoo of Speak for Animal, a voluntary organisation, said.
When asked, a BMC spokesperson said that the provision of drinking water for birds and stray animals near water kiosks will be provided soon. “It should be ready in a day or two,” the spokesperson said.
