Animal Care Services seeks help after seizing 55 pets in cruelty case

Corpus Christi Animal Care Services is asking for community support after the investigation of an animal cruelty case led to the impoundment of more than 50 cats and dogs on Thursday.

The facility called for adopters, fosters and rescue partners this week to help find homes for 10 large dogs, or any other available pets, before Monday in preparation for an influx of impounded animals.

“Currently, we’re at full capacity,” said Joel Skidmore, program manager for Corpus Christi Animal Care Services. “We have many animals that aren’t under investigation available (to be adopted or fostered), and we have some great animals who really need a second chance.”

Skidmore said the department received reports of a home with multiple animals needing medical attention.

After making several attempts to contact the homeowner and observing a “hoarding situation,” Animal Care Services obtained a warrant to remove the animals.

On Thursday, the department seized eight dogs and 47 cats from the home. The animals found during the recent search are not currently available for adoption.

“Many had untreated medical conditions due to lack of veterinary care,” Skidmore said. “We had medical staff and our veterinarian on scene, so animals were being triaged as they were brought out of the house.”

One individual faces possible criminal charges following the investigation. Their identity was not released.

Animals may be viewed in person at the facility kennels at 2626 Holly Road Monday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Pets available for adoption may be viewed online at www.24petconnect.com.

“We will take whatever support we can get,” Skidmore said. “We have some small dogs, puppies and large dogs who need homes. We need support to get the capacity down so each one can get the individualized attention that they need.”
