With 420 votes in favor, 0 abstentions, and 0 votes against the bill, Mexico’s first nationwide Adequate and Sustainable Food Law will now pass to the Federal Executive, who will sign it into law.

This achievement stems from Animal Equality’s three-year collaboration with Food Alliance and Climate Action, all of whom worked together with Senator Nancy de la Sierra Arámburo to propose the bill.

With the passing of this law, Mexico will now promote a dietary model that prioritizes  the consumption of plant-based foods while significantly reducing the consumption of animal products. The law also seeks to raise awareness about the environmental impact of food choices.

In addition to promoting human health and sustainability, this law’s emphasis on plant-based foods will lead to a reduction in animal suffering. We will continue working with Mexico’s legislators to promote compassionate, sustainable, and nutritious foods across the country.

Sustainable and healthy food choices

Global experts have long pointed to the environmental and health consequences of the factory farming industry. By moving toward a plant-based food system, Mexico aims to fulfill its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This includes its Climate Action Goals (SDG 13), Health and Wellbeing Goals (SDG 3), and Responsible Production and Consumption Goals (SDG 12).

Advocates of the bill point to its potential to decrease food insecurity, childhood obesity, and chronic malnutrition in Mexico. By passing this bill, Mexico’s lawmakers hope to find accessible, nutritious, culturally rich, and affordable alternatives that protect its biodiversity and ecosystems.
